The riders taking part in this week’s evening time trial at Betteshanger CP enjoyed what may have been the best conditions of the year so far. It was warm and sunny with light winds, and several riders posted their best Betteshanger times of the season.
A total field of 21 riders took part, with 14 solo riders, 2 two up teams and even a three up team as well.
Four junior riders took to the start line and once again Dougie Tulett was quickest, but not in a time he was expecting. His time was 24.09 due to a rear wheel which was rubbing against the frame, and subsequently quite a bit of time was lost. Second was Seb Mugford of VC Deal with 27.41, just ahead of fastest girl, Ferne Peirce in third place. Ferne’s time was 28.07.
After a few weeks away from taking part in the evening events, Neil Gerrard returned and took top spot with 22.01. Not too bad considering Neil hadn’t ridden his TT bike for a month. Second place went to Brian Hood in a time of 26.54, and fastest female solo rider this week was Fiona Flaherty, who recorded a time of 28.48. Taking part in his first time trial for several years was Robert Tulett, grandfather of Dougie and Alice. He was uncertain how it would turn out and was pleased with a time of 37.56.
The 2-up battle was the same pairings as a few weeks earlier. Once again, the team of Faye Faiers and Pete Huckstep came out on top with 25.27, while Ole Zdzieblowska and Richard McVey came in with an improved time of 26.42, compared to previous rides.
Finally, there was a three up team consisting of 11-year-old Stanley Preston, dad Robert Preston and their friend, Rod Archibald. The team rode well together for a time of 29.32.
Times of all riders can be found in the accompanying table.
As always, we must thank our band of helpers who ensure that the event can take place. This week, they were Andy McCall, Terry Fearn, Malcolm Adams and Dave Mastin.
Please Note:
The popular Pip McVey 2-up team time trial, originally scheduled for 21st August, will now take place on 28th August.
